McCoy Confirms He Might Be in The Hobbit

August 28, 2010

A little over ten years ago, Sylvester McCoy auditioned for the part of Bilbo in The Lord of the Rings. He was nearly cast, but was edged out by Ian Holm. However, with Holm declining the part in the upcoming prequel films based on The Hobbit, rumors surfaced a while back that McCoy step in to fill the void. According to today’s edition of the Dunoon Observer/Argyllshire Standard (which I read everyday of course). Sylvester McCoy has confirmed he is in contention for a part in the upcoming prequels. However, he says he is being considered not for Bilbo but one of the Wizard parts in the upcoming ‘Hobbit’ films.

I’m guessing he’s not competing against Ian McKellen for Gandalf, because that sounds foolish. So perhaps the filmmakers are recasting Saruman because of Christopher Lee’s age and reluctance to reprise the part, or maybe The Hobbit films will feature Radagast the Brown. The only other wizards are the blue ones, and I think I’m one of only eight or nine people who actually care about them, so that’s unlikely! Besides, McCoy said of the part, “It’s not the Bilbo role, but could be bigger.” Now I’m left wondering who could be bigger than the titular character of the book.

Am I the only one who realizes Sylvestor McCoy should be cast as Bilbo or Thorin and not a wizard?

McCoy could be a great wizard, but he could be a great Bilbo or Thorin as well.
